You don't find your life purpose. It finds you — usually after you've spent half your life doing what everyone told you to do.
你找不到的。是你活到一半了，它来找你的。
I realized this when I hit middle age. Before that, I was living a life that wasn't mine. Not because I wanted to — because I had no other choice. Or so I thought.
我是人到中年才发现的。在那之前，我过的是不属于自己的人生。不是我想的——是我觉得没得选。或者说，我以为没得选。
Take writing. I liked writing when I was young. My family said: "What money can you make from writing?" You see how it works — first, the money question. Second, nobody around you has ever done it, so they don't get it. So I kept getting negative feedback. From my family. From my boss. From everyone. Eventually I stopped.
拿写作来说。我年轻的时候喜欢写作。家里人说："写作能挣到什么钱？"你看，都是这个套路——先问钱，然后没人做过所以不理解。然后就是持续的负反馈。从家里，从老板，从所有人。最后我就不写了。
For years, I felt lost. Not the poetic kind of lost. The boring, everyday kind. You know the feeling — you're doing what you're supposed to do, but something feels wrong. You can't put your finger on it. But it's there.
好多年里，我都觉得迷茫。不是那种文艺的迷茫。是很普通、很日常的迷茫。你懂的——你在做该做的事，但就是不对。你说不上来哪里不对。但它在。
Then I looked at my BaZi chart. Fire is too strong. It needs Water. Writing is Water. The thing I gave up on because of all the negative feedback was exactly what I needed all along.
后来我看了自己的八字。火太旺，需要水。写作就是水。我因为负反馈而放弃的东西，恰恰是我一直需要的。
Once I started writing again, three things I'd been struggling with for years all got resolved. Money. Passion. Direction. Not in that order. But they all got resolved.
重新写作以后，困扰我多年的三件事都解决了。钱。热情。方向。不是按这个顺序。但都解决了。

Translation / 翻译:
"To find your Use God: what's too strong needs to be weakened; what's too weak needs to be strengthened… Only by finding balance can you enter the middle path."
取用之法：太强的要弱一点，太弱的要强一点……找到平衡，就对了。
My interpretation / 我的解释:
Here's the thing about this passage: it doesn't say "chase what's strong." It says find what's missing. Your life purpose isn't about amplifying what you already have. It's about discovering what you need. That's the Use God (用神).
这段话最打动我的一点是：它没说"追最强的"。它说找到缺的。你的人生目标不是放大你已有的。是发现你需要的。那就是用神。
1. Why This Question Is So Hard
为什么这个问题这么难
How many people are asking this? According to search data, 120,000 people a month type "what is my life purpose" into Google. That's not including all the variations — "why do I feel lost," "what am I meant to do." If you add those up, it's probably 200,000 or more.
有多少人问这个问题？搜索数据显示，每个月 12 万人在 Google 上搜"我的人生目标是什么"。这还不算各种变体——"为什么我迷茫"、"我到底是来做什么的"。加在一起，大概 20 万以上。
So why is this question so hard? Because most advice you get is useless. I'll list the usual three:
那为什么这个问题这么难答？因为大多数建议都没用。我列一下最常见的三条：
- "Follow your passion" — yeah, if you knew what your passion was, you wouldn't be asking.
- "Try new things" — tried. Didn't help.
- "Just meditate on it" — sitting in silence didn't do it for me either.

2. "多尝试新事物"——试过了。没用。
3. "静下来想想"——我也试过。也没用。
The real problem: all these suggestions assume your purpose is something you figure out. BaZi says something different. Your purpose is something you discover. Not through thinking. Through your chart.
真正的问题：这些建议都假设人生目标是靠想出来的。八字说的是另一回事。你的目标是发现的。不是想出来的。是从你的盘里看出来的。
2. What BaZi Actually Says About Purpose
八字到底怎么说人生目标
BaZi is built on three things, when it comes to purpose:
八字看人生目标，就看三件事：
1. Your Day Master (日主) — the element that represents you. This is your core. Not your personality. Your core.
1. 你的日主——代表你的那个元素。这是你的核心。不是你的性格。是你的底层。
2. Your chart's balance — which elements are strong, which are weak. This tells you where you're out of alignment.
2. 你盘的平衡——哪个强、哪个弱。这告诉你哪里不对。
3. Your Use God (用神) — the one element that fixes everything else. This is your direction.
3. 你的用神——唯一能平衡其他一切的元素。这就是你的方向。
Different elements pull you in different directions. Here's the simplest version:

3. What I Learned That Nobody Told Me
我学到的没人教我的东西
Here's one thing BaZi taught me that no Western framework touched on: purpose is not a feeling. It's a balance problem.
八字教了我一个西方框架没碰过的东西：目标不是感觉。是平衡问题。
When your chart is in balance, you don't need "motivation." You just do the thing. You don't need to push yourself. There's no friction.
当你的盘平衡的时候，你不需要"动力"。你就是会去做。你不需要逼自己。没有阻力。
When your chart is out of balance, no amount of goal-setting will help. You can write all the 5-year plans you want. If they're not aligned with your Use God, you'll give up on all of them. And then you'll wonder why you're such a quitter. You're not. You're just swimming upstream.
当你的盘不平衡的时候，你再怎么定目标也没用。你可以写所有的五年计划。如果它们跟你的用神不匹配，你最后都会放弃。然后你会奇怪为什么你老是半途而废。你不是。你只是逆水行舟。
I spent years being told what to do. My family said "get a stable job." My boss said "hit your targets." Society said "follow the plan." Nobody asked me what my chart needed. Nobody even knew my chart existed.
我花了好多年被人告诉该做什么。家里人说"找个稳定的工作"。老板说"完成目标"。社会说"按计划走"。没有人问过我的盘需要什么。甚至没人知道我的盘存在。
Once I saw it — Fire too strong, needs Water — everything clicked. Writing is Water. Expressing yourself is Water. Getting thoughts out of your head and into words — that was the element I was missing. That was the Use God all along.
一旦我看出来的——火太旺，需要水——所有东西都连上了。写作就是水。表达就是水。把想法从脑子里拿出来变成文字——那就是我一直缺的元素。那就是我一直在找的用神。

I'll keep this simple. Each element has one thing it needs. Find yours:

木 Wood — Start something. Just one thing. Any thing. A project, a plan, a conversation you've been avoiding. Start it.

火 Fire — Put something out there. A post. A comment. Something that says "I exist."
发出点什么。一篇文章、一个评论。什么能表达"我在"就行。
土 Earth — Do something with your body. Walk outside. Cook a meal. Clean your desk. Get out of your head.
做点身体的事。出去走走。做顿饭。收拾桌子。从脑子里出来。
金 Metal — Let go of one thing. A project that's dead. A relationship that's over. A standard that's too high. Drop it.
放手一件事。一个死了的项目。一段结束了的关系。一个太高的标准。放下。
水 Water — Stop planning for one day. Just do what feels right. Don't overthink it.
停下一天不做计划。做感觉对的事。别想太多。
6. The Three Things You Need to Know

Day Master is the baseline. Use God is the direction. Luck Pillar tells you: is now the time to act or wait?
